A putting green is the one piece of synthetic turf where the surface has to perform, not just look right. Ball speed and roll come almost entirely from what is underneath: how the base is graded, how well it is compacted, and how the contour was shaped before anything green went down.
That is why a green is built differently from a lawn. Tighter pile, heavier compaction, cups set at the levels you actually want to putt from, and a longer fringe collar around the edge so the green reads like a green rather than a rectangle of turf.
Most of ours end up as part of a wider yard rather than on their own, tied into the patio, the gravel, and the planting so it looks like it belongs there.
A natural grass green in the Hill Country is not a realistic thing to keep. Between the heat, the water restrictions, and the mowing height a real green needs, it would be a full-time job and it still would not survive a bad summer.
