Limestone underfoot, slopes on most lots, and new neighborhoods with no shade yet. All three change what is worth planting.
Boerne sits on rocky limestone, and that single fact drives most of what a landscape here needs. Planting, irrigation trenching, and hardscape footings all cost more effort than they would on deep soil, so they are worth planning properly rather than discovering halfway through.
Add slope to that and drainage stops being optional. Retaining walls, grading, and where runoff ends up have to be decided early, because they determine what the rest of the yard can be.
Planting, irrigation, and hardscaping all get harder when the rock starts a few inches down. Tree pits usually need augering, and trenching routes have to be planned rather than assumed.
Many Boerne homes sit on grade. Drainage, retaining walls, and grading have to be done precisely, because a wall that was not built as a drainage structure will not stay a wall.
Newer developments have not grown their shade yet. Plants and materials both have to handle full exposure for years before any canopy arrives to help them.
Rock close to the surface means very little infiltration. What falls, runs, so where it runs to is a design decision rather than something to find out during the first storm.
Working on limestone is a practical skill more than a design one. Knowing what can be trenched, what has to be augered, and how to build a bed with depth where there is none is the difference between a landscape that establishes and one that sulks for three years.

Native and adapted plants that do not need shade to survive. Texas sage, salvias, rosemary, muhly grasses, and yucca all handle full exposure while the trees you plant now grow into providing cover later.
Often, and where they do the wall is doing drainage work as well as holding ground. Both get designed together rather than one after the other.
