Rain here arrives all at once and runs across rock. Grading, dry creeks, and drains that take it somewhere sensible instead of toward the house.
A drainage problem in the Hill Country is rarely about rainfall totals. It is about how the rain arrives and what it lands on. Several inches in an afternoon, onto a few inches of soil over solid limestone, on a lot that slopes.
Water that cannot soak in has to go somewhere, and left alone it picks the route of least resistance. That is usually across a patio, through a bed, and toward the lowest point of the house.
Fixing it starts with working out where the water is coming from and where it can reasonably go, then shaping the ground to make that happen. Pipes and drains are part of the answer, not the whole of it. Sometimes the fix is as much about where the irrigation is putting water as about the rain.
Most lots here sit on a few inches of caliche over rock. That means very little infiltration: what falls, runs. It also means trenching is real work rather than an afternoon with a spade, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you a price over the phone.
New-build lots are the common case. Grading gets done for the house rather than the yard, downspouts empty onto a bed, and the first heavy storm finds the low corner nobody thought about. We take that work across the Hill Country, Spring Branch and New Braunfels included.

There has to be a legitimate outfall. If there is not one, the answer changes and we will tell you that before starting.

Dry creeks and swales are landscape features when they are built properly, and eyesores when they are not.
Because the ground here is mostly rock a few inches down, so almost nothing soaks in. An inch of rain in an hour behaves very differently on caliche over limestone than it does on deep soil.
Carrying surface water along a route you chose rather than one it picked. Built properly it handles a real storm and looks like a landscape feature the rest of the year.
Often, yes. Downspout extensions, a catch basin in the right low point, or a short run of French drain solve a lot of problems. We would rather do the small fix that works than sell the big one.
It is the thing we would look at first. Everything else in a yard can wait a season. Water sitting against a foundation is worth dealing with sooner.
If there is a real water problem, yes. Planting, turf, and hardscape all sit on top of the grading, so it is expensive to fix drainage after they have gone in.
