Your yard should be as good as the view. On these grades that starts with retaining and drainage, not planting.
Canyon Lake properties tend to have the best views and the hardest ground to work with. Homes sit on steep grade or rocky bluff, which means leveling, retaining, and drainage are the first three problems rather than finishing touches.
Get those right and the rest is straightforward. Get them wrong and you spend years watching soil, mulch, and money move downhill after every storm.
Usable outdoor space here is usually made rather than found. Terracing and retaining walls turn a slope into somewhere you can put a table, and they have to be built as drainage structures, not just walls.
There is often very little depth to plant into. Beds need building up with the right material rather than digging down into something that is not there.
Exposure is higher than in the more sheltered towns. Plants that are fine in a Bulverde back garden can struggle on an open Canyon Lake lot, and materials take more UV and more wind.
On a slope, water moves quickly and takes soil with it. Erosion control is part of the landscape rather than an add-on, and dry creeks tend to earn their place here.
Most of what goes wrong on a sloped lot is structural, so that is where we start. Retaining, grading, and drainage get designed before anything decorative, because they are what everything else sits on.
We have been building on this ground since 2017 and know which plants hold up on an exposed lot, which materials handle the sun, and what a real storm does to a slope that was not prepared for it. We work the lake and the towns either side of it, New Braunfels and Bulverde included.

Always, and it is the most common thing left out. Water building up behind a wall is what pushes it over, so drainage goes in as the wall is built.
Native and adapted plants that tolerate wind and full sun. Texas sage, salvias, muhly grasses, yucca, and rosemary all cope well. Anything wanting shelter and shade will struggle up here.
A combination of grading, planting that holds ground, and built features like dry creek beds that carry water along a route you chose instead of one it picks.
