More rain, more slope variation, and soil that changes street to street. The plan has to start with where the water goes.
New Braunfels gets heavier rain than much of the surrounding area, and it drains fast. Combined with real slope variation and a lot of river-adjacent ground, that makes runoff and erosion the first thing worth solving on most properties.
The soil is the other variable. Between older established neighborhoods and newer developments, what you are planting into can change completely from one street to the next, so the plant list gets decided after we have looked at the ground rather than before.
Storms drop more here and the ground sheds it quickly. A yard that seems fine most of the year can move a surprising amount of soil in one afternoon if the grading was never right.
Properties near the rivers or sitting low need erosion control and deliberate runoff direction. That work is unglamorous and it is the difference between a landscape lasting and washing out.
Older neighborhoods and newer developments can have completely different ground. We check what is actually there rather than assuming a standard New Braunfels soil profile, because there is not one.
New builds are typically handed over with thin sod over scraped ground and a couple of stressed trees. Fixing that properly means soil work and irrigation correction, not more mulch.
