Most yards get used in the evening and lit like a car park. Path, tree, and feature lighting placed so you notice the yard, not the fixtures.
A landscape gets looked at in daylight and used in the evening. Lighting is what decides whether the yard you paid for exists after seven o'clock or disappears.
Good outdoor lighting is mostly restraint. A few well-aimed fixtures uplighting an oak, grazing a limestone wall, and marking the level changes on a path will do more than a row of bollards down both sides of everything.
It also makes a property safer to move around. Steps, grade changes, and the walk from the drive to the door are the places people trip, and they are the places worth lighting first.
Much of the Hill Country still gets genuinely dark, which is part of why people move here. That is worth designing around rather than flooding out, and warmer, lower-output fixtures aimed at something specific read far better than bright ones aimed everywhere. That holds whether the lot is in New Braunfels or out toward Canyon Lake.
The live oaks are the other opportunity. A mature oak uplit from two or three points does more for a property at night than any amount of lighting at ground level, and it is the thing visitors notice from the road.

Yes. Lighting is one of the easier things to retrofit, since low-voltage cable can usually be worked into existing beds without disturbing much. It is still cheaper to plan it alongside a build.
It should not. Lighting everything evenly flattens a landscape and wastes the effect. The aim is contrast: a few things lit well, and the rest left dark.
Fixtures get placed with a few years of growth in mind, and uplights aimed at trees usually need re-aiming as the canopy fills out. It is worth checking them every couple of seasons.
Lighting the approaches and removing the dark spots around a house makes a property easier to move around at night and less appealing to linger near. We would not sell it as a security system.
